Happy Black History month everybody! I hope everyone has been productive and inspired during these winter months. It is still winter here in Cali even with this erratic weather.

Sometimes the best source of inspiration for me is cinema. So I decided to delve into an old musical....The first major studio all black musical to exact. Carmen Jones---starring the radiant Dorothy Dandridge. So we all acknowledge that the storyline is problematic but the costumes are pitch perfect.

So much so that I always see the off the shoulder top and skirt recreated, typically during Halloween. I figured this would be a perfect look to start with for my black icon homage series.
For the top I used McCalls 0527. I used the bodysuit with view B and followed the directions for the bodice only. Instead of using the sleeve pattern, I cut 2 rectangles at different lengths to create a layered ruffle and used elastic to gather it just off the shoulder. It was perfect for the look I wanted to achieve.
Then for the skirt I used McCalls pattern 7725 view C. I had this pattern for some time and finally had an opportunity to use it. I did have to resize it a bit as I was only able to find the smaller pattern size, but other than that, it's a very easy and fast sew.
Heres how it came out. How'd I do?
